Curated information to help patients and families navigate serious illness with clarity, confidence, and compassion.
When cure is no longer the goal, hospice provides expert comfort-focused care at home or in a facility. Here's what Georgia families need to know.
Hospice is a Medicare and Medicaid benefit that covers physician visits, nursing care, aide services, medications related to the terminal diagnosis, equipment, chaplain services, and bereavement support โ usually at no out-of-pocket cost to the patient.
Hospice is appropriate when two physicians certify a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its natural course. Patients can continue hospice beyond six months if they remain eligible.
Enrolling in hospice does not mean giving up. Patients can leave hospice at any time to pursue curative treatment, and can re-enroll if they choose to return. It is not a one-way door.
Georgia Medicaid covers hospice for eligible patients. The Georgia Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (GHPCO) can help connect families with vetted hospice providers throughout the state.
